HVAC Installation Qualification (IQ) Overview

HVAC Installation Qualification confirms that the HVAC system has been installed in accordance with approved design documentation, specifications, and manufacturer requirements. IQ provides the foundation for all subsequent functional verification and establishes confidence that the system was built correctly before it is challenged operationally.

IQ does not evaluate system performance or room conditions. Its purpose is to verify physical installation and configuration, not environmental outcomes.

Scope of HVAC IQ

HVAC IQ applies to system components and elements that may impact controlled environments, including:

  • Air handling units and associated components
  • Ductwork and air distribution elements
  • Filtration stages, including HEPA housings where applicable

  • Utilities supporting HVAC operation
  • Interfaces with building management or control systems

Only components with potential quality or compliance impact are included. Non-critical items are documented through standard commissioning and maintenance records.

  • Equipment installation against approved drawings and specifications
  • Correct materials of construction where specified
  • Filter types, ratings, and installation orientation
  • Proper installation of sensors and transmitters
  • Labeling, identification, and tag consistency

IQ confirms that the system is complete, traceable, and ready for functional testing.

Gaps identified during IQ must be resolved or justified prior to OQ execution.

Relationship to Commissioning

Commissioning supports IQ, but does not replace it.
